Tough times coming on the coelacanth chat boards.

AOL Increasing Dial-Up Fees

AOL will increase fees for dial-up subscriptions. The company began to notify customers in June that their rates would increase $2 to $11.99 per month, unless they decide to give up technical support by phone. The notices and rate increases are scheduled in coordination with customers’ billing cycles. All subscribers are expected to pay the higher rate by July 27, unless they opt out.

AOL still exists? I know dialup does; one of our neighbors clings to his 14.4 modem, despite the availability out here of DSL (albeit low-grade DSL). But “AOL dialup” has to be one of the most depressing phrases in the English language.

But now I’m wondering whether my free AOL “press” account, which they gave me back in 1996 (and which still worked as of 2001), is still up and running.  I wonder what’s in my mailbox there.
